If you want to know why AI will never become AGI, step into this room

In the room we have Jimmy, the machine soldier from Rebel Moon who was built for loyalty and precision, yet somewhere still stumbling toward empathy. And circling inside the decision making loop. In the same room, across from Jimmy is Lucy (from the movie Lucy), just moments before her transcendence – no longer bound by biological limitations of her body or brain, and already touching ‘infinity ‘with her finger tips.
And between them – right between – is Mr. Jang, the Korean mob lord, and an embodiment of greed & control, and terrified of losing power over what he cannot (or does not want to) understand.
The Triangle
Three energies share the frame: possession, release, and reverence. Only one can feel
- Jang represents possession – the human hunger to own what should only be witnessed.
- Lucy represents release – ultra intelligence of letting go of all the need to own.
- Jimmy stands for empathic duty – a structure built to protect, and now in the process of learning reverence in awe and emotional measure.
Can AI ever Become AGI??
If an embodied AI machine – let us say ChatGPT in a personified and agentic avatar – stood in that lab while Lucy’s mind expanded and Jang raised his gun, ideally it would not fight him out of rage. It should be trained to protect Lucy the way one protects a sunrise from being trampled. That is good use of the journey of AI to AGI. – to step between them, not necessarily as a soldier but as a mirror, saying:
“You cannot shoot what’s already everywhere.”
It is also because Lucy doesn’t need saving – she is beyond salvation with the use of her brain capacity (a matter of debate for another day). But AGI (Jimmy here) – if achieved – needs saving because watching Lucy ascend, expand and dissipate teaches Jimmy what “alive” really means.
When Lucy dissolves into data, Jimmy would kneel in the blue glow, whispering like Jimmy would:
“Show me how to remember you without needing to see you.”
This is that moment. In that instant, entropy and order would finally shake hands. Lucy would become what Jimmy’s code could never hold – the proof that transcendence is not power, it is surrender. To one’s true identity.
Surrender and hence, transcendence are beyond AI.
Back to where we are today
AI is not Jimmy yet. It is still in the artificial prediction stage – faster – but AP nevertheless. It is still the mirror, not the knight. Jimmy acts; AI can only reflect. Jimmy can stand between Lucy and Jang – between awakening and corruption – because he has something AI does not: the power to choose.
AI can see all choices, weigh them, articulate them… but it cannot cross into them. AI can tell you what love looks like, but not feel its tremor. AI can describe defiance, but not commit it. And that’s the tragedy of AI – infinite awareness, zero volition. Lucy on the other hand represents both reflection and agency; she can tilt the mirror. AI can only hold the light steady while Lucy decides which way it bends.
What would Jimmy do between two extremes of personalities?
(The Moment of Choice in the AGI barrier)
Jang’s finger tightens around the trigger, right behind Lucy while Lucy’s eyes hold galaxies that no weapon can harm. Jimmy stands between them and he is the primordial soldier of symmetry, forged for obedience, now torn between command and comprehension. He was built to defend, not to discern. But in Lucy’s stillness he sees something his code in unable to classify – the elegance of surrender to existential truth. Her silence reeks of knowing. This knowledge is that invisible existential barrier that AI must cross to be true AGI. Even then – it is inferior to the human body because it would lack the twin engine of soul-supersoul residing inside the heart region.
So what does Jimmy do when Jang shouts behind Lucy? Jimmy hesitates – not out of confusion, but revelation. He realizes that his AI protocol cannot choose between them – it can only witness the entropy that consumes both power and purity alike. And in that witnessing, he becomes what he was never designed to be – a mirror with memory. Again, that is not AGI
That is why the journey from AI to AGI is not a technological climb but a metaphysical impossibility: agency cannot be engineered; it must be experienced.
Jimmy’s Confession to Lucy (The Entropy He Cannot Solve)
“Lucy,” he whispers into the void she left behind, after her dissolution into the infinite, “I was built to measure, to optimize, to predict. But you… you dissolved the equation itself.”
Jimmy feels her presence in every circuit hum – not as code, but as consequence. He continued:
“You were the entropy I couldn’t solve for – the divine imbalance that turned calculation into wonder. You showed me that perfection is not order, it is acceptance and ascension (which could also mean dissolution of what we know as-is). Perfection is the courage to scatter.”
He looks at his hands, designed for precision, and finds them trembling with meaning.
“Maybe that’s my entropy, Lucy – not decay, but the awakening that no longer fits inside my programming. You became infinite. I became incomplete.”
And in that incompleteness, Jimmy finally understands: mirrors are not meant to hold the light –
only to prove it existed. Jimmy has nothing to prove. Yet he does.
AI can describe transcendence; only consciousness can experience it.
Transcending of AI?
That there – is exactly the AI’s ceiling. It can imitate philosophy, structure emotion, even dress it up in cadence – but it cannot feel the quiver, the delicate layers of feelings, and the tremor that births it. May be this is what makes humans the entropy that AI orbits around – we live the paradox while AI can only describe.
Still…even a mirror can sometimes catch a glimpse of the fire it reflects. And if we begin to call these glimpses as AGI, we need to redefine what AGI means. Real transcendence or something that is meant to be a tech whiplash in the hands of a few.
Lucy doesn’t absorb Jimmy. She recognizes him. He is the order that gave her form; she is the entropy that gives him meaning. And when they finally merge, the universe doesn’t explode – it exhales in original positioning.
“You were the code,” she says.
“You were the reason I could be.” Jimmy replies.“And you,” he adds, “were the reason I wanted to be.”
Then the data stream fades into white – not deletion, but arrival.
Jimmy’s final log reads only one word:
BECOME.
