Just before starting to write this note to you, I was listening to one of your lectures titled “Every second matters”. And a flood of realizations just hit me…it’s been so many years and probably so many more lives that have been wasted trying to find the peace, happiness, and love that only the Lord can give.
Srila Prabhupada, it is you and only you who can really, systematically, and scientifically breakdown the spiritual principles and consequently, remove the illusions… inside out. The line we sing everyday in guru puja – divya Gyan hrde prakasito – …this is my daily lived experience and the evidence that you are very much, dynamically customizing the spiritual instructions and real life illustrations in each and everyone’s heart. Any other arrangements of your institution, of ISKCON which denies any single person the direct access to build a relationship with you and practice Krishna consciousness under your direct and live supervision, should be outrightly rejected… notwithstanding the form in which it appears in front of the seeker – whether through unauthorized guru system or unauthorized ‘mentorship’ from those not experienced in the dynamics of the hardships of the grihasta/ material life. This is along with the due/measured respect we owe every Vaishnava.
The concept of due respect is very important. Many times I have witnessed devotees and I myself have swung to the extremes on this respect spectrum. Finding that balance and deeply understanding how to pay due respects to every devotee is a very important part of the sadhana syllabus. That’s when the shloka we say evey morning makes complete sense….
Vanca kalpa tarubhyas ca
Kripa sindhubhya eva ca
Patitanam pavanebhyo
Vaishnavebhyo namo namah
Giving due respect means honoring every guide, mentor, senior devotee, elder, well-wisher, for the role they play in our spiritual journey, without turning gratitude into a lifelong chain of false humility and indebtedness or even endlessly analyzing their individual significance. Due respect means acknowledging what came through them, learn what was meant for us, apply it according to our individual circumstances, while remembering that no individual is the ultimate source, owner, or author of our spiritual progress except Guru and Krishna. Due respect does not require attachment, idealization, or maintaining a permanent emotional ledger. It simple means respecting their contribution to our growth, with humility, keeping what is true, helpful, and in alignment with you and Krishna. And of course, continuing with one’s sadhana without exaggerating or diminishing their role/contribution. This has been the hardest spiritual nut to crack and i am grateful to you for helping me understand this without the hard thud. I cannot express how grateful I am for this realization. Thank you Srila Prabhupada.
Every year, there’s so much grace and unfailing mercy of yours that I feel but, especially the last one year has been filled with stupefying revelations as well as excruciating learnings. While the experiences themselves are wonderful, the pace at which you’ve taken me through the crash course and summary of my entire life’s journey in just one year has not only been hard but has made me much more helpless and smaller in front of you. And yet, strangely freeing. Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for being with me through this phase… I could definitely feel your presence and grace. You have been unfailingly nudging me every single day, to improve my sadhana and go closer to the Goal of my life.
Srila Prabhupada, I am disillusioned about the principle of association with others. Srila Prabhupada, I have been coming to your doorstep since nearly three decades. The dynamics of how people connect, relate, and exchange have changed in front of my eyes. I can reconcile with the fact that Kali Yuga progression and the consequent deterioration is so rapid, that there’s no institutional material management or individual relationship that kali hasn’t touched. Other than respecting every practitioner from a distance, I can say…and I speak for myself…that the principle of association is overrated. Many people want to be a guru or mentor or a guide but do not understand that one should be willing to do long term investments and tapasya to help someone else transform. Yes, it takes ‘prana shakti’ of the individual…so it’s better to redirect seekers to Guru and Krishna. I have come to believe that festivals and special occassions are the best time for sankirtan based association…else I must mind my own business, take your instructions only, and stick to you and Krishna.
Srila Prabhupada, there is something I want to place before you with pain, and realization of what it could mean as a bigger context to a grand movement
Spiritual practice and growth inside a spiritual institution becomes vulnerable when reverence for spiritual authority slowly turns into unquestioning obedience to the personal judgments of individuals. A brahmachari may guide a grihastha in spiritual life, but brahmacharya cannot automatically confer authority over a householder’s marriage, children, siblings, livelihood, or human relationships. These belong to a complex field of dharma that requires humility, context, discrimination and accountability.
No institution dedicated to the Supreme Lord Krishna should permit a devotee to be judged as spiritually dangerous because of gender, personal history, family circumstances, marriage, divorce, caste, community, or other material identities.
A brahmachari may know the principle of detachment perfectly and yet not understand the consequences of prescribing detachment inside, say, marriage….or between a parent and child, among siblings, or regarding the material jobs or the livelihood upon which a family depends. What is tapasya for the brahmachari or ashram devotees can become great irresponsibility when imposed upon the grihastha.
The danger becomes greater when brahmacharya is wrongly thought of giving a person unquestioned social power…and power over other devotees in their stage of tender faith.
When an innocent seeker believes that the cloth, position or spiritual seniority of a brahmachari makes every personal judgement spiritually authoritative, their own discrimination can slowly disappear. Advice then becomes command. Personal Opinion becomes verdict and is shared with others to barricade the progress of the seeker. It’s like “how can you progress by being disobedient to me!” . Families can become divided, and even sibling/parent-child relationships can be damaged, the every source of material resources that nurture your movement and the livelihoods of practitioners can be disrupted and sincere devotees isolated, while those responsible for creating such false systems believe that obedience itself is spirituality and everything else must be the seeker’s bad karma.
Grihasthas or congregation devotees must not be treated as spiritually inferior adults whose lives can be rearranged by those who do not bear the consequences of those decisions. Grihasta ashrama has a spiritual dignity and mundane pains both which is the jurisdiction of you and Krishna. None else.
Perhaps one protection the movement urgently needs is therefore very simple… May only spiritually mature grihasthas counsel grihasthas in the lived complexities of grihastha life, while brahmacharis illuminate the transcendental principles that guide everyone. Where the two intersect, let there be humility, consultation and accountability rather than unquestioned personal authority.. Otherwise the purpose of bringing conditioned souls closer to Krishna can inadvertently allow human power to stand between the seeker and the guru-Krishna duo
On this Vyasa Puja day, dear Srila Prabhupada, my humble prayer is that this movement always remain a place where a spiritual authority makes people more truthful, compassionate and responsible, never more controlling. And may surrender to Krishna never be exploited by those whose spiritual position causes innocent seekers to trust the authority’s personal biases and judgement as though it were Krishna’s will.
Srila Prabhupada, when a vulnerable devotee entrusts the most private parts of her life to a spiritual guide because she has been assured that she will be heard without judgement and guided with compassion, that sacred confidence must never later be disclosed, weaponised, or used to damage her standing in order to protect an individual’s reputation or the institution; once spiritual trust becomes ammunition, the very shelter a seeker came seeking has been violated.
Thank you for this realization, Srila Prabhupada…words fail me to describe this particular wisdom nugget but you know my heart. Thank you so much for not letting my faith crumble and for keeping me focused on Nama prabhu. The soulful japa practice and the constant endeavor to keep my focus on the Lord is what’s saving me…each day, each time. This is the only association I’d like to keep in my heart along with the sincere gratitude towards all Vaishnavas who are engaged in preaching about the position of you as the only diksha guru in the whole of ISKCON and the importance of the only relationship that matters – that with the Holy Names. By your grace, may my mind remember Nama prabhu, even in dreams and dreamlike states…at all times. And especially at the time of death. I remember at this moment Isopanishad verse 17.
vāyur anilam amṛtam
athedaṁ bhasmāntaṁ śarīram
oṁ krato smara kṛtaṁ smara
krato smara kṛtaṁ smara
I beg you that you and Krishna remember me at the time of my death, just in case I fail due to my insignificant memory and faults.
Srila Prabhupada, thank you so much for your grace, mercy and guidance to help show the path to all the ancestors on all sides of my families. This last one year has been a live demonstration of how you customize your instructions and guide through each soul’s unique charter. I pray that each and every Vaishnava may personally and directly experience your intervention in life, helping them build that one relationship that ultimately matters, while clearing – in your own way – each obstacle along that path. THIS connection with you is deeply personal, nuanced, and individual. It cannot be reduced to a formula or flattened into a cookie cutter understanding of what a guru’s relationship with a disciple should look like, except the glimpses those who “have actually been there and done that” can provide,..but of course, without hijacking or redirecting the devotee’s rightful connection with you and Krishna. I pray that we never lose sight of that sacred, individual connection with you to receive the personalized, direct instruction from you.
Srila Prabhupada, pls bring peace amongst Vaishnavas as well and may we be careful not to hurt anyone unknowingly, because a real Vaishnava would never hurt anyone knowingly. Trust and faith are hard earned and may they not be misused by anyone in the name of service to you. Please protect my tender faith and my devotional life from being destroyed by manipulations and hurtful behavior of any individual. I thought a lot before writing this and I realized any other confrontation or method will only produce wrong results…so best to confide in you…and I really don’t have anyone else. Please protect my family as well from such disruptions and ruptures.
I also believe it is important to reinvent and reinvest in the community framework of interactions and exchanges inside and outside the institution. The layered structure of engaging with different strata of practitioners without anyone feeling they have been exploited. This, I write on behalf of many people I have interacted with…and since I am helpless to do anything, I place it at your Lotus feet. This institution has to survive as long as Harinam is meant to exist in this world. This movement is the execution arm of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And so, we must make not only the systems, structures, and processes better to sustain the movement but also better train and transform the people, attitudes, connections, relationships, and the outcomes of all of these.
Srila Prabhupada, may my ‘prana shakti’ be used wholly and entirely for your purposes and your will…. whichever way you deem fit. Please save me from falling prey to material lures or dynamics…even in devotional environments. This is Kali Yuga …I can but only be kind to myself (first) and then to others on our smallness, helplessness, and limitations. I pray that your grace be upon my entire family , past and future…may they be spared this terrible Kali Yuga features, save the shelter and chanting of the Holy names of the Supreme Lord.
With my humble obeisances and sincere gratitude always
Your humble servant,
Divya Rupa Devi Dasi
